Railway Operating Superintendent, Wijaya Samarasinghe stated that special measures would be taken to sought legal action against those who travel on railway tracks in a careless manner.
Several incidents with regard to taking selfies on the railway tracks and committing sui cide by jumping in front of trains have been reported in recent times.
most recently the incident where two brothers were killed whilst taking a selfie near the Colpetty train station, and the incident where a couple attempted to take a selfie near the Kahawa train station that resulted in the death of the youth have raised increasing concern.
Superintendent of Railway Security, Anura Premarathne noted that 20 individuals have been killed in the past six months owing to negligence whilst attempting to take selfies on railway teacks.
Railway Operating Superintendent noted that a new mechanism would be implemented to aid with decreasing the frequency of such accidents , with the support of the train security division and public support.
